Opposition holds anti-government protest

TIRANA, February 8/ATA/ The Democratic Party in opposition and its allies held a protest in front of the Premier’s Office today, starting at 5:00 PM. The protest was expected to last until 8:00 PM, but ended at 6:45 PM, as soon as the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, finished his speech.

Some of the protesters gathered at the “Skanderbeg” Square in Tirana downtown, while some of the PD militants began their march from the blue headquarters, together with the Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha. They marched towards the “Martyrs’ of the Nation” boulevard and arrived by 5.40 PM in front of the Premier’s Office, where there was set up a stand for the protest leaders to deliver their speeches.

Democratic Party MP Ina Zhupa said in a television appearance that in today’s protest, there are the citizens who decide.

“We stand by the side of the citizens. Today, it will be one of the most powerful protests of the DP; it will be another way to show that citizens will not give up, they will resist, and on May 11 they will make the change that every Albanian citizen wants,” said Zhupa.

The Freedom Party has also joined the protest, while there was also heard an audio message from prison by the Freedom Party chairman Ilir Meta.

Meta said that May 11 is the day, “when the the narco justice will expire”.

“I take this opportunity to invite all the emigrants to register to vote in the elections, so that they do not miss this historic opportunity to contribute to restoring their country to the tracks of the Constitution, freedom, democracy and accountability,” Meta said.

This was the opposition’s first protest for 2025, which comes in the wake of a series of rallies held during 2024 as part of the opposition’s civil disobedience campaign.

On the other hand, the police had taken measures for the smooth running of the protest, with around 1,000 police officers on the ground managing the opposition rally.

In order to ensure the smooth running of the rally, according to the police, there was also restricted movement of vehicles on several roads. /p.s./
