“Transparent Albania,” Gonzato: Transparency, cornerstone for progressing with integrity

TIRANA, Dec 13 /ATA/ The European Union Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, participated on Friday in the launch of the “Transparent Albania” platform, a unique gateway for quick and easy access to information, prioritizing budget transparency.

In his speech, Gonzato stated, “Today marks the conclusion of the Week of Integrity, featuring sessions that prompted us to reflect on various issues. I am confident that these discussions have provided fresh insights into the current situation and the future of integrity in both the public and private sectors.”

“Integrity means doing the right thing, not because it may be the easiest thing to do, but because it is the right choice and in accordance with the law. It means honesty and having strong moral principles and values. Integrity is vital because it is the foundation of trust, accountability, and justice. These are the very pillars for good governance, effective institutions, and a healthy society, because without trust, there is no cohesion in society,” emphasized Gonzato.

Ambassador Gonzato stated, “It is crucial to recognize that integrity is not limited to public administration; it must also flourish in the private sector. I am glad to see that prominent businesses and business associations have supported and taken part in the Week of Integrity.”

“Since I spoke about ethics, values, principles, integrity, and accountability, these are not only becoming permanent practices in the business community, but they are also a genuine demand from citizens. Corruption and the misuse of state resources not only channel these resources for the benefit of just a few, but also erode trust in institutions, damage reputations, reduce system efficiency, and hinder future success,” emphasized Gonzato.

Meanwhile, Gonzato continued, integrity provides a culture of accountability and transparency, reinforcing the fact that we all must be honest. These are essential components for sustainable growth, stability, lasting prosperity, as well as success for businesses and a better financial future.

Gonzato said, “This meeting is very important, as it is also a result of the recent membership negotiations. Albania has adopted roadmaps and agendas for reforms related to the judiciary, public administration, and the business climate. We expect the private sector to be part of the implementation of these reforms, ensuring fair competition in the market, good governance, financial reporting, the rule of law, EU standards, and trust in institutions.”

“At the same time, the enlargement report of October 31, 2024, reinforced the need to raise awareness among public officials about ethical standards. We are very pleased to see progress in the right direction in addressing these issues properly,” said the European Union Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato.

Gonzato also emphasized the need for investment in educating younger generations on the importance of good governance, transparency, and combating corruption.

“Transparent governance remains the cornerstone for moving forward with integrity,” said Gonzato.
