Albania stepping up anticorruption efforts – Minister

TIRANA, Nov 18 /ATA/ – Albania is steadily stepping up efforts to tackle corruption by strengthening the government’s transparency and accountability mechanisms, the Minister of State for Public Administration and Anticorruption Adea Pirdeni said in her remarks at a regional conference in Prishtina, Kosovo.

Pirdeni attended the regional conference on best anticorruption practices, an event hosted by the UNODC – United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and UNDP office in Kosovo through the UNMIK financial support.

In her remarks, Albania’s State Minister put emphasis on importance of common regional commitment to strengthen the transparency and accountability mechanisms.

“Albania is fully committed to deliver on its obligations under the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), promote integrity, accountability and transparency. The government’s proactive approach to the fight against corruption is evidence to implementation of the UNCAC principles to tackle corruption as a phenomenon that erodes not only social and state morality, but turns into a serious obstacle to the country’s economic development,” Pirdeni remarked.

According to her, the justice system reform is significantly contributing to Albania’s progress on its path towards European Union accession.

She also focused on the Anti-Corruption Sectoral Strategy and Action Plan for 2024-2030, the main political document that sets out concrete commitments of the relevant state institutions tasked with further deepening the fight against corruption at all levels of government.
