TIRANA, November 13/ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama emphasized today the need of having a common political will so that to go beyond words and join for good deeds to fight climate change.
Prime Minister Rama told the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP29, which is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan, that, “Our speeches full of good, big words to fight climate change, do not change anything”.
“Life goes on according to its old habits and our speeches are full of good words to fight climate change. But, they don’t change anything. And even worse, as the UN Secretary-General put it yesterday, the carbon emissions have actually increased this year from the previous COP instead of decreasing while ambitious targets are being pushed back once again to a world that is more and more perverted and deeply divided”, said Rama.
The prime minister said that Albania has 100% renewable energy production, while underlining the significance of going beyond words and uniting for deeds against climate change.
“I come here from a small country located in the middle of Europe, Albania, where we are proud to have 100% renewable energy production. But, what does this mean for the future of the world if the biggest polluters continue their way, as usual? God forbid it for me to lecture anyone, since after all we are used to listen to lectures, but my idea is what the hell are we doing in these conferences, one after another, if there is no common political will on the horizon to go beyond words and come together for meaningful action. Even worse, some big and small actors have even boycotted this annual event”, he said.
“For a long time, we Albanians were cursed by history to live in complete communist isolation having not any rights, without any freedom of movement, without any hope for the future. While recently, we are blessed with the EU society and for the first time in history freedoms, dreams and hopes have become part of our lives. But, what is happening in Europe and in the world today does not leave much room for optimism even because optimism is the only way of survival that we Albanians know”, added Rama. /a.f/p.s./
