TIRANA, Nov 6 /ATA/ – Albania’s Finance Minister Petrit Malaj has rejected a proposal forwarded by the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) to set a minimum living wage of 200 euros a month, calling it incomplete and lacking detailed analysis.
Responding to DP lawmakers Jorida Tabaku at the Parliamentary Committee on Finance and Economy on Tuesday, Finance Minister stated that the lacked a thorough study to justify why this amount is appropriate, or whether it would be sufficient to meet the real needs of citizens.
“The proposal doesn’t clarify whether it would be adequate to meet the citizen’s real needs and it fails to take into consideration the government’s social assistance in calculating the minimum living wage,” Malaj added.
The proposal, introduced by opposition Democratic Party MPs in 2023, aimed to secure a basic standard of living for citizens facing economic hardship.
In an earlier response, Ministry of Finance underlined that the proposal did not consider essential factors, such as existing social support programs or whether the suggested amount would truly meet citizens’ needs.
Lawmakers, including Jorida Tabaku, have expressed concerns about the government’s approach. “Where does the government stand on the minimum pension? What actions are being taken to address the basic income of vulnerable citizens?” Tabaku questioned during the Economy Committee meeting a day ago.
