TIRANA, Oct 4 /ATA/ – Heavy rainfall swept across Albania on Friday, triggering floods, disruption of certain national roads and prompting evacuation and safety warnings from authorities.
Incessant rain caused travel disruptions across the country, leaving several key roads waterlogged and triggering congested traffic.
The coastal southern city of Vlora is the worst affected with water flooding roads and neighbourhoods and causing other serious problems.
Vlora Mayor Ermal Dredha told reporters that 22 families evacuated, while local emergency crews helped to safety three stranded people.
“We are fully coordinating our actions and efforts with central institutions, the Ministry of Defence, the General Directorate of Civil Emergencies, because the situation is beyond our capacities. It is impossible for us to cope with the situation. Some 22 families have evacuated to safety so far,” Dredha said.
Reports indicate that several national roadways are facing severe traffic delays as water accumulates due to the relentless rainfall.
In the event of emergencies, road users are encouraged to dial the free emergency number 112 for immediate assistance from the authorities.
The heavy rains are expected to continue into Friday midnight and the situation is expected to slightly improve on Saturday.
