Flood situation in Vlora normalizing, 33 families evacuated

TIRANA, Oct 4 /ATA/ – Flood situation in the coastal city of Vlora, southern Albania, is normalizing, officials said on Friday evening.

Leonard Qyra, the Head of Preparedness and Coordination of Emergency Response said that the flood situation in the city is improving after decrease in rainfall in late afternoon and flood water is steadily receding.

Defence Ministry, in coordination with the General Staff and the Civil Emergency Directorate, deployed 28 troops, eight vehicles, water pumps, rubber boats and other equipment to the coastal city.

Authorities said that 33 families evacuated their homes and have been temporarily housed in school dormitories.

Heavy rainfall swept across Albania today, triggering floods, disruption of certain national roads and prompting evacuation and safety warnings from authorities.

The coastal southern city of Vlora was the worst affected with water flooding roads and neighbourhoods and causing other serious problems.

No heavy rain is expected in the coming hours, but the Ministry of Defence will closely monitor the situation in the ground to help local authorities in Vlora.
