TIRANA, Sept 28 /ATA/ Parliament Speaker, Elisa Spiropali, hosted a delegation of European women academics at the Assembly’s Presidency, who are in Tirana to promote gender equality and organize a conference on gender challenges in artificial intelligence.
Parliament Speaker Spiropali emphasized that “Albania has already dispelled these gender biases regarding the development of information technologies and artificial intelligence, considering that an Albanian young woman, Mira Murati, is among the most distinguished scientists in this field globally.”
“But this is more to it. In recent years, Albania has been at the vanguard of women’s participation in political and social life, in civil society, in the economy, in markets, and also in technological development. Many youth-led startups in the field of technology, both in the country and in the Diaspora, are run by women and girls,” she stated.
Spiropali invited the women present at the meeting to recognize the realities of how women and girls in Albania are facing the difficulties of technological progress and becoming leaders in these processes.
“In this legislature, we have 50 elected female deputies, which make up about 36 percent of the total number of deputies in Parliament. Five out of eight permanent parliamentary committees are chaired by female colleagues. Twenty-six out of 64 lawmakers entering Parliament for the first time in this legislature are women. Half of the members of the Council of Ministers, nine out of 18, are women. Success lies not only in the numbers but also in the quality of the elected women in central and local governance. They serve in office by bringing expertise, professional skills, competencies, experiences, and political career activities that represent a reference and an asset for the entire society,” emphasized Spiropali.
The Speaker of the Assembly briefed the participants in the meeting on some achievements and other aspects towards gender equality and how these issues are being addressed in the Albanian Parliament.
