PRISHTINA, Sept 24 /ATA/- The European Union has called on Serbia to take actions and make sure that the suspects behind the deadly attack on Kosovo police in the village of Banjska last September be held accountable.
One year ago today, September 24, 2023, armed Serb militants launched an attack on Kosovo Police in the village of Banjska, killing police officer Afrim Bunjaku. Meanwhile, three gunmen were killed in a shootout with Kosovo police.
Kosovo authorities define the Banjska attack as terrorism and accuse Serbia of being involved in the attack. Serbia has dismissed the allegations.
Earlier this month, Kosovo’s Special Prosecution announced that it has filed an indictment charging 45 over the attack.
Milan Radoicic – former vice chairman of Srpska Lista, largest ethnic Serbs party in Kosovo, which enjoys Belgrade’s support – has taken full responsibility for the attack.
Asked by Radio Free Europe whether Serbia should cooperate with Kosovo authorities on the court trials expected to ensue, the EU leading spokesperson Peter Stano said:
“Yes. This is what we have repeatedly stated regarding the cases when the suspects are in Kosovo.”
Authorities in Serbia refuse to extradite Radoicic to Kosovo and say he will be tried by “Serbian courts”, while officials in Kosovo say they have offered him protection.
Stano also said that Serbia should also do more regarding the suspects over the attacks against KFOR soldiers, the media and local residents during the last year’s unrest.
