TIRANA, July 2 /ATA/ – Two condolence corners have been started in the stone city of Gjirokaster, the birthplace of the genius of the Albanian literature Ismail Kadare, for both local residents and visitors to offer their condolences on the books displayed in the two locations.
One of the condolence corners has been set up at the Bazaar Pass, where the bas-relief “Honor of the City” for the writer is located, and the other is stationed at Kadare’s museum-house.
Mayor Flamur Golemi told the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) on Tuesday that it is time for local authorities to launch procedures for a memorial to Kadare in the museum city.
“Kadare deserves a memorial in Gjirokaster for promoting the city in the world through his books. The Municipality of Gjirokaster will cooperate with the Ministry of Culture,” Golemi said.
Kadare passed away at 88 a day ago. The Council of Ministers declared two days of national mourning in tribute to renowned writer and the national flag is being flown at half-mast across all state and public institutions.
Ismail Kadare was born in Gjirokaster on January 28, 1936. He was a novelist, poet, essayist, screenwriter, and playwright. Kadare was a leading international literary figure and intellectual.
Kadare was the recipient of a number of international prizes for his works, which totalled more than 80 novels, plays, screenplays, poetry, essays and story collections translated into 45 languages.
