TIRANA, June 21 /ATA/ – The Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, also Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, stated Friday that a major power cut that hit almost entire territory of Albania earlier today was due to failures in the transmission lines caused by the power grid overload and the soaring air temperatures amid a major heatwave across the country.
A massive power outage hit Albania at midday and initial inspections indicate that high electricity transmission volumes and extreme heat were the main causes of the complete shutdown of the transmission lines.
“Albania’s power transmission system experienced a critical situation just a few hours ago. A fault was detected along the interconnection line between Albania and Greece, causing a cascading effect that triggered power outage throughout the country. Initial inspections show that high electricity transmission volumes and extreme heat are to be blamed for the technical fault,” Balluku said.
On the other hand, Balluku also said that other power transmission operators in the region had informed her that a similar power cut has caused blackout across Montenegro, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“It is worth noting that specialists, engineers, and technicians and the Power Transmission Operators worked diligently and restored power through transmission lines throughout the country within 30 minutes’ time, whereas the power was restored in Tirana in just 17 minutes,” she stated.
Balluku warned that although power is restored all over the country, the situation is still fragile due to high transmission volumes via the interconnection lines amid extreme temperatures in the coming days.
