TIRANA, May 27 /ATA/ – Chairman of the Democratic Party (DP) Lulzim Basha viewed an anti-corruption resolution as attempt by the ruling Socialist Party to gain electoral advantages or a dirty trick against the Special Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Prosecution Structure (SPAK).
In a press statement ahead of Monday’s parliamentary session, the Basha stated that the main opposition party wouldn’t support a resolution that does damage to the justice system reform and SPAK’s efforts against government corruption in particular.
“What mechanisms does this resolution offer to fight corruption? We expect those who have forwarded this resolution to demonstrate that this initiative is not merely an electoral action. Albanians expects to see whether this is an effort to electoral advantage or even a dirty conspiracy plan against SPAK and the justice reform. Hence, they should tell Albanian citizens why just 10 months ahead of next general elections, after having been involved in gravest corruption affairs, are now forwarding such a proposal. DP is seeking to strengthen SPAK and calls on Socialist Party to back the amendments we have proposed several months ago,” Basha said.
Basha reiterated the opposition’s proposal that offers a process for vetting politicians similar to the one implemented under the justice reform.
