Tensions erupt outside Ministry of Education on 6th day of protests; journalist injured

TIRANA, October 18 /ATSH/ — The sixth day of protests by students and civil society activists began with demonstrators gathering in front of the Ministry of Education on Durrës Street.

The gathering initially featured dancing and music, before the crowd settled in front of the Ministry of Education. The young people and other citizens who joined them held national flags and called for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Following this, clashes erupted as some protesters began hurling stones, Molotov cocktails, and other projectiles at the Ministry of Education and the police.

During these clashes, a journalist was hit in the stomach by a stone. The impact left her dizzy and on the verge of fainting.

After the clashes, the police dispersed the protesters using tear gas and made the first round of detentions. Following the police intervention, the protesters moved toward the city center, allowing the police to take control of Durrës Street.

This morning, as well as throughout the night, employees from the Municipality of Tirana and other institutions cleared the capital’s streets of debris left behind during the first few days of the protests. Meanwhile, the stones that protesters used to attack the Prime Minister’s Office, other institutions, and police officers have been cleared from the nearby sidewalks. /gj.m/a.f/p.s./
