CoE says is exploring ways how to proceed with Kosovo’s membership bid

PRISHTINA, May 17 /ATA/ –  The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (CoE) convened in Strasbourg on Friday, but Kosovo’s membership bid was not included on the agenda.

The President of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, Dominique Hasler, said that the Committee was exploring ways how to proceed with Kosovo’s accession to this human rights organization.

Hasler, also Foreign Minister of Lichtenstein which holds the CoE Presidency, said in remarks after the Committee of Ministers meeting on Friday that Kosovo’s membership was highlighted by many Committee members and the Committee has commenced discussions on ways how to proceed with the country’s membership bid.

Despite fulfilling all criteria for CoE membership, Kosovo’s bid faces obstacles. Its exclusion from the Committee of Ministers’ agenda highlights divisions within the CoE and the influence of lobbying efforts, particularly from Serbia.
