Kumbaro in Mat: Waste separation at source, stringent legislation for environmental offenses

TIRANA, April 26 /ATA/ Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mirela Kumbaro, conducted an inspection in Mat municipality to see first-hand implementation of the pilot project that enables separation of waste at source and its collection by the municipality’s teams directly from the businesses and residents by phasing out the large urban waste containers in the city.

Accompanied by the mayor of Mat, Agron Malaj, Minister Kumbaro stopped in the city of Burrel where she also exchanged with residents, who shared this experience of urban waste management.

“It is not easy to convince an entire community that lives in different neighborhoods, on the main street, village, city because of the differences, but also because of the tradition. I have noticed that the roads that lead to the city are clean and also the sides of the roads that become dumping grounds for travelers’ waste, which unfortunately still continue to be thrown from the cars”, said the minister.

Minister Kumbaro also emphasized that we need to make sure that the spots where the dumpsters have been removed undergo an aesthetic requalification of the territory.
The mayor of Mat Agron Malaj elaborated on this project, which took about a year to be implemented.

“The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has just completed a more stringent legal package which increases the penalty for environmental offense and turn it into an executive title,’ the minister said.
In addition to the initiative that phases out dumpsters in the city streets, the Mat municipality will designate car parking areas which will be conceived as rest areas fitted with waste bins .
