New vaccination schedule for whooping cough, Committee recommends two boosters

TIRANA, April 21 prill/ATSH/ The spike in the number of whooping cough cases has prompted the National Immunization Committee to recommend the addition of two acellular pertussis boosters to the basic vaccination schedule.

The director of the PHI, Eugena Tomini, in a televised interview, mentions the age group this recommendation applies to.

“Two boosters will be administered on children aged 4 and 6 and then aged 13. The current recommendation is a combination of the whooping cough vaccine on the schedule that is whole-cell with two acellular pertussis boosters,” said Tomini.

Tomini also clarified the distinction between whole-cell and acellular vaccine. According to her, the difference lies in the immune response.

The recommendation for two whole-cell pertussis boosters also applies to pediatric and infectious medical staff, as well as to pregnant women after the 26th week.
