TIRANA, March 29 /ATA/ The chief justice of the Constitutional Court, Holta Zaçaj, who is on an official visit to the US, in an interview with the Voice of America broadcast, made a brief overview of the meetings held with some of the highest personalities of justice in Washington D.C. , the role of the Constitutional Court, the relations with the parliament and the challenges facing this court in its work.
Some of the senior US officials with whom the delegation of the Constitutional Court of Albania held meetings were the Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Bruce Swartz, and the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Yuri Kim.
In this interview, Zaçaj affirmed that the meetings with senior officials in Washington D.C., focused on the most relevant issues for the Albanian judiciary and justice and the importance of the Constitutional Court in resolving the conflict of powers between state bodies, in the final interpretation of the Constitution and in safeguarding fundamental rights and freedoms.
Asked by the Voice of America journalist, Kejda Kostreci, about the opposition’s criticism of the decision-making on the Rama-Meloni case, Zaçe said that the disgruntled parties have their right to criticism, such as the right to freedom of expression, which enables all actors to give their opinion.
“Every court decision leaves certain parties dissatisfied. The court acts hermetically. “Judges are independent and do not act under pressure,” she said.
Asked about the discussions on the issue of the mandate of MP Olta Xhaçka, Zaçaj said that “the situation is unprecedented and unlikely to happen in a democratic state. The decisions of the Constitutional Court must be implemented. The institutions responsible for implementing them must behave in a constitutional manner.”
Asked about the vote of immigrants, Zaçaj answered that “the court speaks by means of rulings, they must be implemented, it not for politics to decide how and in what way the decisions should be enforced, they are self-enforcing. Any decision that is not in line with that of the Constitutional Court is not the right decision or action.”
