TIRANA, March 27 /ATA/ – The acting Mayor of the southern Albanian municipality of Himara, Jorgo Goro, currently in detention for corruption and alleged abuse of office, has resigned from office on Wednesday.
In a letter sent to Himara’s City Council, Goro provided arguments about his resignation, while rejecting any wrongdoing and the charges filed by the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organised Crime (SPAK).
Goro’s departure comes in the wake of his arrest on charges of abuse of power, stemming from accusations of fabricating documents to secure state-owned land for a private tourist resort.
Clarifying his position and rejecting any allegations, Goro said that he was not aware that the property documents were forged, since the documents are handed over to the mayor only for signature.
Prosecutors demanded the arrest of Mayor Jorgo Goro a day ago, citing his alleged involvement in creating fraudulent documents.
