TIRANA, March 26 /ATA/ – The Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime decided Tuesday to put the Mayor of Himara, Jorgo Goro, on remand in custody.
Today’s decision comes after prosecutors of the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime, SPAK, two days ago ordered Goro’s arrest on corruption charges related to alleged abuse of power.
The acting Himara Mayor stands trial on corruption charges and forgery of documents to unlawfully obtain state-owned land and properties, purportedly for the construction of a private tourist resort.
Alongside Goro, another individual was arrested, while three officials from the Himara and Vlora municipalities were placed under house arrest.
Jorgo Goro acted as Mayor of the southern Albanian municipality of Himara after last year’s mayoral elections, when mayor-elect Fredi Beleri was arrested and is now standing trial on vote buying charges.
