PM Kurti: Kosovo’s EU membership, normalisation dialogue with Serbia should be separated

PRISTINA, Jan 22 /ATA/ – Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated Monday that the country’s European Union accession process and the EU-mediated normalisation dialogue with Serbia should take place separately.

In a press statement in Skopje, where he attended the conference titled “The Growth Plan: Western Balkans Meets EU,” PM Kurti said that the dialogue process is currently taking place between the country’s chief negotiator and the EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and other Western Balkan regional issues, Miroslav Lajčák, to determine the future steps of the process.

“Kosovo’s EU membership process should be divided from the normalization process with Serbia. I understand that good neighbourly relations are at the core of the EU, but it should be figured out that it is not easy to normalize relations with a state, whose priorities are neither the democracy nor the West,” PM Kurti said.

Kosovo government head told reporters after the regional summit that peace and the rule of law should prevail and security threats must be stopped in order for the Western Balkans to integrate economically.

He added that Kosovo’s security measures against Serbia are a must as long as the terrorist group that committed aggression on Kosovo last September are still at large.
