Electoral reform, Rama: If there is no will on consensus, other avenues will be explored

TIRANA, Jan 10 /ATA/- By Maela Marini/ Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Wednesday that regarding the reforms requiring 84 votes in the Parliament, the aim is to reach a consensus on the bipartisan commission and if this does not happen, other avenues will be explored, as is the case in Europe.

During the press conference at the end of the two-day government meeting in Shengjin, Rama responded to the media about the passage through the Assembly of reforms that require a qualified majority of 84 votes, such as the electoral reform.

“I did not say that we will not consult with anyone. I mentioned the bipartisan reform commissions, so I did not say that we will do the reform on our own, that we have achieved many things, the truth is that arithmetical result on the back of overcoming the arithmetic was not achieved until today, because we do not make a point of it. While they have achieved it.”

The prime minister brought the example of the Italian and Greek parliaments, which are parliaments that often seek to implement reforms.

“These parliaments do not apply bipartisan commissions. The Constitution does not provide that it is needed a bipartisan commission. According to the constitution, 84 votes are needed, that’s it. Of course, it would be good to get it done with commissions, but the bipartisan commission requires two parties to take shape.”

“If by the end of the process there is will, they will be welcome, if there is not, we will turn over a new leaf, which implies no commission, that is, without bipartisanship. There are other ways, as others do in Europe”, the Prime Minister said.
