Interior Minister says investigation into January 21 events should continue, bullets to be sent for forensic examination to Italy

TIRANA, Jan 4 /ATA/ – The Minister of Interior Taulant Balla told a press conference on Thursday that a decision by the European Court of Human Rights, which has found the Albanian state responsible for the shooting of three people by the National Guard during opposition protests in January 21, 2011, has paved the way for the authorities to go to the bottom of the investigation into the case.

Interior Minister announced that the bullet that allegedly killed one of the protestors will be sent for forensic examination to Italy in the next two days.

“It is the task of the state institutions and the law enforcement agencies, the State Police, Tirana Prosecutor’s office to translate and transpose the legally binding decision of the Strasbourg Court to conduct complete investigation, as the Court has put emphasis on the entire chain command and the steps taken by state authorities to obstruct investigation, justice and other issues,” Balla said.

“In this context, the European Court decision has opened up new opportunity to go to the bottom of this case. The State Police are doing their part in terms of the examinations and the bullets will be sent for forensic examination to Italy after two days,” he added.
