TIRANA, Dec 19 /ATA/ The Secretary for Electoral Reform and the legal representative of the Democratic Party, Rezart Kthupi, in a media statement on Tuesday, said that this party has filed a draft proposal in the Parliament of Albania with the aim of developing a legal mechanism for stripping MPs of immunity.
According to Kthupi, the Democratic Party has maintained a constant and coherent position on the immunity of the deputy, considering the latter rudiments and a symbol of inequality between voters and the elected.
“The draft decision to amend the regulation of the assembly creates the legal basis for the deputies within 5 days from the approval of the proposal and within 5 days from the beginning of the legislature to file with the parliament speaker a written statement by which they quit the parliamentary procedures for the removal of immunity paving the way for justice to take preventive measures of arrest in cases of criminal investigations in connection with the charges brought against them,” he said.
The Democratic Party, Kthupi said, appreciates that the justice reform, which it has supported every step of the way, has finally produced a justice system independent of politics, which has gained trust and has broad citizen support in its work for investigating and cracking down on high-level corruption in politics and state administration.
