TIRANA, Dec 6 /ATA/ – The main opposition Democratic Party lawmaker, also member of the DP chairmanship, Merita Bakiu called on government on Wednesday to adopt an amendment tabled by the opposition to boost the budget spending for the country’s education system.
Reacting in a press statement to the results of the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment, PISA tests, released a day ago, showing that Albania‘s average results were down compared to three years ago in mathematics, reading and science, the opposition lawmaker clearly showed the government’s failure regarding the education policies.
“The results are clear evidence showing how misgovernment has sent the country’s education to the lowest historical levels. PISA test results are a strong alarm bell for Albanian society and a slap for the Ministry of Education, which must bear responsibility for this misery of education and be held accountable for the state where the education of our children,” Bakiu stated.
Opposition MP said that the PISA tests measure 15-year-old pupils’ ability to use their mathematics, science and reading knowledge and the results showed Albania has performed worse compared to three years ago.
“The The Democratic Party calls on the Albanian government to take urgent measures and analyze this serious result, starting with the state budget, given that there is still time to revise the budget earmarked for the education system. The increase in the funding for this sector is vital, so we in the Democratic Party have filed an amendment to increase the government spending for education in the 2024. Education has been underfunded compared to the real needs and that’s why Albania has such a low ranking in PISA results,” according to Bakiu.
