DP calls for open candidate lists and national proportional electoral system

TIRANA, Nov 10 /ATA/ – The Democratic Party’s Secretary General Enkelejd Alibeaj, also co-chairman of the ad-hoc Electoral reform Committee, said in a press statement on Friday that the main opposition party is convinced that Albania’s electoral system should change.

Alibeaj said that DP calls for an open candidate list and national proportional system to be applied in the upcoming elections in Albania.

“The Constitutional Court has ordered the Assembly of Albania that the electoral code be based on the open candidates list to allow citizens to directly elect their representatives and be them the ones to elect their lawmakers and not the party chairman,” Alibeaj said.

According to him, an open list system would also allow Albanian voters to determine the element of the electoral race within the political parties.

He stated that such a system is an obligation to optimize and democratize the political parties and an open list system would deliver on such a process and would ultimately deny the party chairman of the authority to nominate the candidates to run for a seat in parliament.
