TIRANA, Oct 28 /ATA/ German MP of CDU/CSU, Gunther Krichbaum, said on Saturday, in a press conference, that Albania’s path towards the EU is irreversible and that the German Bundestag supports its journey.
Asked at a press conference about the investigations into former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, Krichbaum said that everyone is equal before the law and that SPAK should not be attacked.
“The statements about the politicization of SPAK make no sense at all, we should protect this institution rather than attack it. Immunity is not a privilege for certain parliamentarians. It protects the functionality of the parliament, which means; during Nazi Germany, when German MPs were sent to prison, the Nazis had a majority in parliament. That’s what immunity is all about. It guarantees and protects the functionality of the parliament, but not of individual parliamentarians. Immunity may be suspended by law enforcement authorities. These issues are dealt with across party lines in Germany. When it comes to questioning immunity issues, there is no doubt. No other way should be accepted. I want to be very clear. As for the fight against corruption, what ensues is self-evident. War is not an end in itself. Corruption affects the poorest of the poor in the country. Everyone is equal before the law. The fight against corruption must be serious. On the part of the Bundestag, this is a matter that is followed very closely.
With regard to his visit to Albania, Krichbaum said that, “I have to say that I have not only met with Lulzim Basha, but I have also met with other members of parliament, such as Jorida Tabaku. We are in contact with each other. I have also had meetings with representatives of Berisha’s group and continue to stay in touch. I’m sorry that DP is divided at this moment”.
“The other aspect is also important. I hope that we will see a strong DP going forward. As for Mr. Berisha, he is now under accusation by SPAK. To begin with, the defendant is presumed innocent until the charge is proven in court. The charges are serious. Here we are talking about processes involving certain properties. The US has designated him,” he said.
