Govt doesn’t comment on justice system decisions, Tourism Minister says

TIRANA, Oct 25 /ATA/ – The Minister of Tourism and Environment Mirela Kumbaro, answering to the reporters’ questions about a trial against the former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, stated Wednesday that the government and the ruling Socialist majority do not comment on the justice system decisions.

Asked by reporters after a regular cabinet meeting about an investigation into the ex-PM Berisha by the Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organized Crime office (SPAK) in connection of a land deal and the privatization of the area in Tirana called “Kompleksi Partizani”, former sports ground and other multisport facilities belonging to Partizani football club, Kumbaro said in a brief statement that the governing majority doesn’t comment on the decisions and activity of the justice system bodies.

“On behalf of the government, I can confirm that we have never commented on any decisions (of the justice system) and that we respect the division of powers. This majority has fought hard so that this justice system can be a functional one,” Kumbaro said.

The trial of former PM Sali Berisha was scheduled to begin today afternoon. This trial was initially scheduled to begin a day ago, but the former PM’s defense attorneys requested more time to get to know all the details of the case.

Berisha failed to report in the Special Court to be questioned in relation to the privatization of a land owned by the country’s Defense Ministry.

Special Anti-Corruption and Anti-Crime Court has ruled that ex-PM Berisha is banned from leaving the country and under an order that obliges him to report his presence in the judicial police.

Court has ordered that Jamarbër Malltezi be remanded into custody and to await trial under corruption and money laundering charges.
