Italy is Albania’s strongest advocate on path towards EU accession – PM Rama tells LA7 TV

TIRANA, Aug 22 /ATA/ – Italy is Albania’s strongest ally as the country progresses on the path towards the European Union membership, Prime Minister Edi Rama told an interview with the Italian television LA7 on Tuesday evening.

The Premier stated that EU accession is Albania’s national goal and neighbouring Italy is the country’s staunchest advocate.

“There is something very important and in political relations in international relations too and that is related to the human factor, the alchemy between people. I would like to recall that 30 years after the fall of the Eastern dictatorship bunker, several centre-left and center-right governments have been serving in office in both camps. However, bilateral Italian-Albanian ties have never been defined by the colors of the governments both in Rome and Tirana,” the government head noted.

Commenting on the close long-standing ties between the two nations, PM Rama said: “There has always been harmony, a spirit of affection, as the relation between Italy and Albania is much deeper. It’s a matter of history! We share a very similar DNA, even though we have been divided by the sea. We also differ in terms of historical events. But we are basically the same. Italy is always in our hearts, it is a very deep relationship. Italy has a strategic interest in being increasingly present in the Balkans, and Giorgia has this national goal. It is also Albania’s national goal to become a full member of the EU, with Italy being is essential and being our strongest advocate.”
