TIRANA, May 23 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama, also chairman of the governing Socialist Party, focused on the untapped tourism potential of the municipalities of Lezhe and Kurbin on Tuesday, voicing confidence that Albania is on the right path to becoming a regional champion for tourism in the next decade, which will fuel growth of the country’s economy.
Addressing a meeting with newly-elected local government officials and local residents as part of the tour across the country to thank voters for giving his ruling Socialist Party a stunning victory in May 14 mayoral elections, PM Rama said that every square kilometre of Albania’s territory has tremendous potential for development of tourism.
“If we want to succeed, we need to expand our arms of ambition beyond our administrative borders and Albania’s borders for the country to become a champion for tourism in the Balkans. Every square kilometre of Albania has a potential to contribute to this goal,” PM Rama said in his remarks.
According to him, the region of Lezhe has yet to tap on around 70% or 80% of its tourism potential.
“This would be translated into more revenue, stronger local and national economy, stronger household economy, more private investment and development of tourism in the area,” he said.
The government head added that Kurbin municipality has the potential to become a major religious tourism attraction.
PM Rama stated that with completion of the national infrastructure and interconnectivity between all parts of the country, Albania will definitely become a major tourism destination.
Rama called on elected local government officials to work hard and do utmost efforts to improve municipal service delivery to the citizens.
