TIRANA, May 13 /ATA/ Farmers have expanded this year the areas planted with strawberries and are increasing exports to EU countries as well.
In the region of Fier, strawberry production is expected to reach over 6,000 tons, as the planted area is also expanding. Hundreds of farmers in this area grow strawberries, while thousands of tons are exported.
Agriculture specialists say that “Made in Albania” strawberries, thanks to their natural flavor and quality, are much on demand, not only by local consumers, but also in the markets of the region and the EU.
Compared to a year ago, the number of plots planted with strawberries has increased by over 20%, counting here their cultivation in vertical farming, while most of the production goes for export.
Farmers in Frakull and Kafaraj famed for strawberry growing say that this year was good for the production and export of strawberries.
They also say that the costs of fertilizing strawberries, like other crops, have already been included in the subsidy scheme, which has reduced the costs of cultivation.
Farmers are selling the product at this time for 1000 lek a box, while in the following months, the price is expected to be reduced by half.
