Ottoman-era Brar Bridge, important architectural structure

TIRANA, May 7 /ATA/ – National Institute of Cultural Heritage called for the public’s attention to an important cultural and history heritage site nearby Tirana for everyone to visit it on the weekend.

Located in the village of Brar and built over River Tirana, the Brar Bridge (Alb. Ura e Brarit) is an important architectural structure classified as a stone arch bridge.

Brar Bridge is the Old Ottoman structure over River Tirana. It is an arch bridge thought to have been built 350 years ago, as a charity gift for the villagers, by one of three Muslim sisters. The bridge is still used by villagers to cross over the river.

What is interesting is that the stones of the arch have been laid by mixing white sand with beaten eggs to make it stronger and everlasting. It has also been verified to have been built on the ruins of the Old Roman Bridge, whose ruins can be seen even today on the foundation of the actual bridge.

In its initial construction phase, at the beginning of the 18th century, the bridge’s cobblestone path was steeper. However, it was later softened by construction of additional retaining walls on both sides of the bridge structure.

The bridge has historically served as vital link between the village of Brar in Tirana and the merchant caravans between the Albanian capital and the northeastern region of Diber, crossing through the village of Tujan.

The bridge is a prominent site in the country’s cultural heritage and is classified as a first category cultural monument, indicating its outstanding cultural heritage values.
