Polling stations open as planned in North Mitrovica

PRISTINA, April 23 /ATA/ – All polling stations in North Mitrovica were opened on early Sunday morning for voters to cast their ballots in snap local elections in the Serb-dominated north.

A total of 18, 118 voters are eligible to cast their votes in these centres.

The situation is calm and everything is going as planned,

For the first time, the Belgrade-backed Kosovo Serb party, Srpska Lista, and other Serbian political parties are boycotting local elections.

Ten mayoral candidates, including only one candidate representing Serbian community, are running in local elections in four Serb-dominated northern municipalities.

A total of 19 polling stations have been installed in the four municipalities, with a total of 45,095 eligible voters.

Early local elections were triggered when all mayors in the four Serb-majority municipalities resigned from Kosovo state institutions last November, claiming that an agreement between Serbia and Kosovo had been breached after the Kosovo government stopped recognising Serbian-issued vehicle plates.
