TIRANA, April 20 /ATA/ – By I. Vata/ The candidate of the “Together We Win” coalition for the municipality of Tirana, Belind Kelliçi, unveiled on Thursday the underpass project at “Skënderbej” square.
In his remarks, at the meeting with the citizens in “Skënderbej” square, Këlliçi talked about the construction of an underground tunnel for cars, which will enable the seamless flow of traffic under “Skënderbej” square, easing the traffic in the center of Tirana.
“Today we offer a simple but very important solution for heavy traffic in Tirana, especially in its center, because it has become a daily nightmare for the citizens of Tirana for years. The Tirana commuters pay so much in the form of wasted time and fuel crawling through the traffic. The implications of heavy traffic which is a common occurrence are greater for the citizens of Tirana: First, this is a very high cost for the family budget. The families of Tirana spend twice as much fuel for their cars as a result of traffic jams. According to our estimates, the bill for families who use cars, precisely because of the traffic, is higher than 100 euros per month; Secondly, and even more important, it impacts the health of the citizens. Air pollution in the center of Tirana as a result of road traffic is about 5 times higher than the norm. Meanwhile, throughout Tirana, the number of people suffering from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases has multiplied,” said Këlliçi.
Also, Kelliçi said that if no measures are taken to reduce traffic and mitigate pollution, this city will collapse.
“The remedy is simple and cost effective. My team is working on similar technical solutions at other intersections in Tirana, which have already turned into major traffic jams,” he said.
