PM Rama warns construction companies: No building permits to be issued if declaring minimum wages for workers

TIRANA, April 12 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama warned Wednesday that construction companies will be denied building permits or the right to take part in the public tenders if they declare minimum wages and far from the sector’s wage standards.

In his remarks at a meeting with business representatives on the minimum wage in Durres, the government head said that by committing acts to avoid paying taxes on the workers’ wages they actually rob their workers of their future pension rights and health contributions.

“We can’t afford a wait-and-see approach if certain companies fail to give their workers a decent monthly salary. It is neither easy nor correct for us to intervene, but we can’t accept a wait-and-see approach as construction companies declare minimum wages for their workers. This is unacceptable,” PM Rama said.

According to the government head, a number of construction firms still pay a minimum monthly wage to their workers.
