CEC turns down Berisha’s registration for mayoral elections, sets 48-hour deadline to complete documentation by official DP leader

TIRANA, March 9 /ATA/ –By I. Vata/ – The Central Election Commission accepted Thursday the application submitted by Enkelejd Alibeaj’s faction within the main opposition Democratic Party to register for the local elections on May 14.

The central election body held a regular meeting on registration of the political parties set to run in the upcoming mayoral elections.

The two factions, one centered around long-time leader Sali Berisha, and the other, currently around Enkelejd Alibeaj, had submitted their applications to the CEC for the local elections on May 14.

In his remarks at the meeting, the State Election Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi acknowledged that based on the official documents submitted to CEC, Lulzim Basha is still the chairman of the Democratic Party, as stipulated by the law, and he is entitled to register for the mayoral elections.

However, the head of the elections body noted that the request to register for the May 14 elections should have been submitted by the DP chairman Lulzim Basha and therefore set a 48-hour deadline to formally file the required authorizing documentation by DP leader Lulzim Basha.

CEC also rejected the request of Berisha’s group to register as electoral subject of the Democratic Party of Albania in the mayoral elections.
