TIRANA, Feb 8 /ATA/ – Tirana municipal institutions and outreach crews are providing warm shelter, food, transportation and medical care particularly to the city’s homeless people amid the wintry conditions with freezing temperatures that have swept the country in the last few days.
Social workers and municipal relevant bodies are providing shelter and warm food for this category of people in the social centers scattered across the capital.
In a televised interview on Wednesday, the Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj outlined a series of measures to help social categories and homeless people in particular amid the extreme weather conditions in recent days.
“What worries us most each year is the situation of the homeless people, although many of them are not Tirana residents. A good part of them are individuals who have left their homes from other cities or villages across the country. Many of them have been through painful human stories and I don’t want to comment on the reasons why they have become homeless, but most importantly we need to make sure that they are granted physical integrity and shelter and food is provided to them. This is why the Municipal Police members and social workers patrol Tirana streets every night and act anytime they receive tips about this category of individuals. Fortunately, a very small number of people are homeless in Tirana, only 36 of them. We have opened nine social centres to provide shelter and warm food, as well as transport and medical care to them,” Veliaj said.
Tirana Mayor also said that special attention has been attached to heating public educational institutions in the capital city.
