Albania hands note of protest over UK Minister’s inflammatory language

TIRANA, Jan 16 /ATA/ – The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs on Monday handed a verbal demarche to the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Albania Alastair King Smith over the inflammatory language used by the UK Minister for Immigration Robert Jenrick against Albanian migrants.

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs said in a press statement that the note of protest voices the concern over the most recent statement and the discriminating language used by the UK Minister for Immigration Robert Jenrick against Albanian migrants.

“Answering to the media interest, the Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Directorate at the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs informs that the British Ambassador to Albania, Alastair King-Smith, has been handed a note of protest at the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. Through this note, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs voiced concern over the latest remarks and the discriminating language used by the UK State Minister for Immigration Robert Jenrick. The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs states that this repeated rhetoric violates the positive spirit of bilateral cooperation confirmed in the Joint Communique between the Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania Edi Rama and the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that acknowledges the shared opinion on the role of the vibrant Albanian diaspora in the UK and its significant contribution to the culture, economy and society of both countries,” the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs said in its official statement.

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs requests the avoidance of this language of hatred and discrimination and the continuation of dialogue and constructive cooperation to deliver on the commitments of both countries as two democratic and allied countries in the international bodies.

“Under the Joint Communique, both countries are committed to further promote cooperation in a wide range of areas, focusing on youth, innovation, tourism, education, and strategic investments of the United Kingdom in Albania,” the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs stated.
