Vucic: It is important to receive EU support for energy

TIRANA, Dec  6 /ATA/ The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, stated on Tuesday that Serbia remains committed to dialogue and holds firm on its pathway towards the European Union.

At a media statement before the EU-Western Balkans summit taking place in Tirana, Vucic said that he decided to participate in the summit to speak up on behalf of Serbia.

“There were a number of different issues. Some official reactions over the Kosovo issue, over the dialogue. This was the main reason, but in the end, after the consultations within the state, we decided to come over and discuss all the issues, because we will have the opportunity, at least, to say what we think about it. We remain committed to the process of dialogue and negotiations with the EU. We hold firm on the pathway to the EU, but we must safeguard our state and national interests in accordance with our constitution,” said Vucic.

Vucic said that energy and roaming charges will be discussed during the summit, which are good news for citizens. According to him, the EU strategy for the Balkans is also important.

“I’m grounded, I’m here to learn from many people, the EU, the region and finally explain Serbia’s position, and I believe we will get good news. There are two such, related to the issue of energy and roaming charges. The EU wants a higher degree of alignment. This means that it is important to get the EU’s support for energy issues, at the same time for roaming. These are good signals, good signs for all our countries in the Western Balkans. Other than what we will hear, it will be the EU strategy for the future. This is of the utmost importance for us,” he emphasized.

Vucic also spoke about the request of the European Union to join the sanctions against Russia.

“The EU has requested full alignment for Russia. Serbia is an independent country, we know our obligations as part of our journey towards the EU, we are aware of our obligations for alignment with EU decisions. But we also have a different situation regarding the territorial integrity of Serbia, which was violated in the most ruthless way in ’99 and in 2008, and we will discuss it today with European officials. Serbia is very close to Russia. It is an independent country. During the last 9-10 months you have heard that Serbia was following Russia’s instructions to cause instability in the region. We have refuted it, not with statements, but with deeds. It is easy to expose yourself to all kinds of accusations, fallacies. The truth comes out and everyone knows the truth. “Serbia is an independent country and holds firm on its pathway to the EU and will remain so,” said Vucic.
