Opposition supporters protest outside Prime Minister’s office

TIRANA, Nov 12 /ATA/ –By  I. Vata/ – Opposition supporters gathered in an anti-government protest outside the Prime Minister’s Office on Martyrs of the Nation (Deshmoret-e-Kombit) Boulevard in Tirana on Saturday afternoon.

The rally has been called by the main opposition Democratic Party’s Chairman Sali Berisha and the Opposition Front under the motto “Albania is in danger.”

The head of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, and supporters of his party have joined the protest in front of the Prime Minister’s office.

Opposition members and supporters from several cities across the country have travelled to Tirana to join the demonstration.

According to opposition, the action aims to denounce the rising cost of living and the government’s policies.

Heighten security measures are in place and authorities have deployed a considerable number of police officers to the impact area in anticipation of the protest.

Many roads were closed to the traffic and some other roads are partially blocked to ensure safety and normal conduct of the gathering.

The protest was opened by the film director Edmond Budina, who called for continued demonstrations “until the government is removed,” and appealed for civil disobedience actions against the government.

Addressing the rally, the Democratic Party leader, Sali Berisha called on Albania’s allies and partners not to support Prime Minister Edi Rama, saying “no stability will prevail without the free and fair elections,” and accused Rama of denying Albanians the right to vote freely.

“I would tell few words to Albania’s partners. I call on EU member states, NATO member states, the United States of America, which is Albania’s strategic partner, not to support Edi Rama’s regime, because Edi Rama is the worst enemy of the free vote,” Berisha stated.

According to him, support given to him is a failure for the Albanian people.

“Albania will never enjoy stability without free vote,” Berisha said.

On his part, the Freedom Party leader, Ilir Meta highlighted what he called “the failures of the current government led by PM Edi Rama.” He mentioned all the government promises prior to taking office and which, according to him, were not kept.

Meta called on citizens to hold the government accountable for these failures.
