Rama: Time of uniform pay raise has passed

TIRANA, Oct  18  /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama on Tuesday held a meeting with rectors of public and non-public universities to discuss the process of ranking higher education institutions.

In reply to a rector, who brought up the example of the University of Ioannina, which was financed 1/3 by the state and 2/3 through private financing, Rama said that “that ratio you said 1/3 is state financing and 2/ 3 is funding guaranteed by the University itself is the essence of the direction we have taken, yet we are off-track to having it in place.”

“We had a discussion with the rectors about the issue of salaries and it should be very clear that the academic world is different from the rest, which means that universities are not like high schools, they are not like 9-year schools either. The lecturers are not like nurses or doctors, police officers or soldiers, who live on state salary. With the reform of hospital autonomy, doctors’ salaries will also be differentiated, according to performance, but they are generally uniform,” said Rama.

“We should understand that the time when the government raises wages uniformly because the unions demand it has passed together with the reform of Higher Education, which is written. Autonomy is freedom and responsibility. The minister said, this is the last time we enable a uniform salary increase. We will support more those who offer more to society and those who are able to offer more to students. There is no other way,” said Rama.
