Rama: Private universities should correct discrepancy between reported salary and what they get paid

TIRANA, Oct  18  /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Tuesday that, “we will make an appeal in advance to private universities, but also to lecturers that if there is a discrepancy between the reported salary and what they get paid, they should correct it, because the process will also include the audit of wealth, as the whole world does.”

In a meeting with rectors of public and non-public universities to discuss the process of ranking higher education institutions, Rama also spoke about the salaries of lecturers.

“We are obliged to conduct an in-depth legal reassessment of all universities in parallel with the ranking. Although the first legal assessment was made a few years ago, it does not necessarily mean that those who passed all of them 7 years ago fulfill them now. So it is needed an in-depth evaluation of all universities, public and private ones, in parallel with ranking to check the compliance with the law, not just as a technical thing, but in view of the performance,” said Rama.

“I understand very well that due to a salary that is still not completely satisfactory in the public university, the lecturers go to private universities and there they declare something else on the payroll and lecturers get something else. It is a fact. I’m not saying all of them, but it’s a fact. It is unacceptable to see lecturers registered in the payroll as if they are working in the toll manufacturing. We make a call in advance to the private universities to correct the discrepancy  between the reported salary and the received salary, because the process will go all out to vet the wealth as the whole world does. If you tell me that you get paid that much and meanwhile you own 2 cars, this and that, then I’m sorry, how do you justify that spending? Of course, they do not come from criminal activities, they come from sources of income that are not reported. To set the record straight, the reality of the salary is different,” emphasized Rama.
