TIRANA, Oct 14 /ATA/ Parliament Speaker, Lindita Nikolla, received the EU Ambassador in Tirana, Christiane Hohmann, who handed over the European Commission’s report on Albania, 2022 to her.
Parliament Speaker Nikolla assessed that the report contains the important achievements of Albania in the process of European integration, which led to the decision of the European Council to open accession negotiations, as well as important recommendations to better address and meet EU standards in some aspects of development.
“The parliament will hit the ground running to draft, implement and check the Action Plan for addressing the recommendations of the European Commission. Work is also well underway to review the legal framework for the role of the Assembly in the process of European accession and the Rule of parliament with the aim of strengthening the legislative and oversight role of the Assembly during the process of accession negotiations,” she said.
Nikolla emphasized that “parliament is also working to strengthen the administrative capacities and human resources of the structures that deal with the issues of European integration.”
She pointed out that the activities of the parliamentary committees will be organized and planned based on the chapters of negotiations and the parliamentary committees will focus on the ex-post review of the legislation.
Guaranteeing the democratic legitimacy of the integration process, Nikolla said that parliament will also focus on the parliamentary control of the government and the fulfillment of the tasks of independent institutions to ensure compliance with the standards of European integration.
Ambassador Christiane Hohmann pointed out that the report correctly reflects Albania’s achievements and the important role of the Assembly in the integration process.
“It is important that the democratizing and integration reforms already underway maintain the momentum and their results are felt by the Albanian citizens. Changing and improving legislation and alignment with EU standards is a long process and our support will be unsparing every step of the way,” Hohmann said.
