PM Rama: Homicide rate falling  to European average rate

TIRANA, Sept 7 /ATA/-By Maela Marini/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Wednesday that Albania’s traffic fatality and homicide rate has consistently dropped year by year.

Addressing a meeting at the Ministry of Interior, the government head noted that the number of traffic accidents and related fatalities has pursued a downfall trend for several years now.

“This is a fact, because the quality of road safety has improved significantly by enhancing police controls, as well as by employing latest technology with intelligent vehicular systems to prevent drivers from exceeding the speed limit. At the same time, the quality of the process of issuing the driving licenses, technical inspection of the vehicles and awareness among motorists has been raised in the past few years,” he said.

The Premier noted that a total of 334 people died in traffic accidents in 2012, “or about one traffic fatality every day.”

“A total of 200 traffic fatalities were recorded last year, whereas only 95 car accidents-related deaths have been recorded to date during this year,” he said.

The Premier noted that the homicide rate has been pursuing a downward trend too.

“As many as 125 people were killed in 2012, but the homicide rate has been halved over the past years. The country recorded 30 murders until the end of July, down from 38 murders during the same period of the previous year, registering the lowest homicide rate in the last 30 years,” he added.
