Xhaçka raises Ukraine issue at UN Security Council

TIRANA, June 17 /ATA/- Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Olta Xhaçka chaired today the meeting of the Security Council on the cooperation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations.

In her speech, Minister Xhaçka stressed that the cooperation between the UN and the EU, based on the UN Charter has developed significantly over the years.

“I would like to thank High Representative Josep Borrell for the detailed perspective of co-operation between the UN and the European Union,” she said.

Xhaçka reminded that during the last meeting, Borrell stated that, “We need this Council to give the necessary decisions. The price of inaction has been paid in unresolved conflicts, in undistributed humanitarian aid and in lost lives.”

“This year, European security has been threatened and the rule of law-based international order has been seriously challenged by Russia’s military aggression against its neighbor, Ukraine. The unjustified war has entered its fourth month, and its consequences are not only being felt in Ukraine with thousands of lives lost, with a considerable extent of the destruction of civilian infrastructure and millions of refugees, but, it has also affected international trade and fueled deep food insecurity around the world. As aggression continues to endanger the lives and physical safety of Europeans, it also poses a challenge to the values of freedom, democracy and justice that unite Europeans. The 6.8 million refugees who have crossed international borders are not tourists trying to discover new places, they are mostly women and children who have been brutally displaced from their homes in search of shelter. We appreciate the generosity and hospitality of neighboring countries and other countries that have opened their hearts and homes to Ukrainians who have fled from a war they did not choose. My country, Albania, is making its modest contributions to welcome and support them,” she said.

Xhaçka said that the unprecedented wave of refugees, unprecedented on our continent since World War II, has seriously challenged Europe, but has not compromised its unity.

“We also expect the European Union to accelerate its efforts to facilitate dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, which should lead to mutual recognition. It’s time to see concrete results and sustainable achievements,” concluded Xhaçka./p.s./
