Opposition MP: SPAK under assault as investigations progressing in right direction

TIRANA, May 18 /ATA/-By I.Vata/ – The opposition Democratic Party lawmaker Jorida Tabaku on Wednesday accused the governing majority of assaults against the Special Prosecution against Organized Crime and Corruption (SPAK), “because SPAK investigations are progressing in the right direction.”

Addressing a meeting of the National Council for European Integration that convened to discuss progress of the fight against corruption and implementation of the recommendations set forth by the European Commission in its annual Progress Report in 2021, Tabaku referred to the chapter 23 on justice and human rights as a key priority included in the last year’s report.

“The EC Progress Report notes that Albania has made efforts in the fight against corruption, although it still remains an objective that requires political will and real actions. SPAK should enhance its capacities to look into corruption affairs. SPAK should be allowed to make more progress in high-profile investigation cases,” the opposition lawmaker said.

Tabaku said that the fight against graft can’t finish overnight, but it is a process and it is up to the new justice bodies to translate their work into tangible results.
