EANA General Assembly confirms TASS suspension

TIRANA, May 13 /ATA/–President of the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) Clemens Pig said today in Sarajevo that the suspension of the Russian agency TASS
membership has been confirmed at today’s extraordinary General Assembly of the alliance, according to FENA.
At the press conference after the General Assembly, Pig stated that the purpose of news agencies is to distribute verified and reliable news and EANA has an obligation to Ukraine’s suffering in these difficult times.
In his personal name and on behalf of EANA, he expressed full solidarity, compassion, and support to the Ukrainian agency Ukrinform, with which they work closely.
Pig explained that the previous EANA Spring Conference concluded that agencies need to increase their public presence and create awareness of their importance when it comes to verified and reliable reporting on world events.
He pointed out that it was concluded that cooperation between agencies should be strengthened because they feel strong economic pressure on their business and administrations must ensure that journalists are free to do their job.
“News agencies in Europe make a great contribution to the distribution of verified and reliable news, even though they are invisible or in the shadow of the media that are used every day,” said Pig.
According to the director of the Federal News Agency (FENA), Elmir Huremović, EANA is the leading alliance of news agencies in Europe and the world, which brings together representatives from 32 leading European news agencies.
At today’s press conference, Huremović emphasized that this year’s conference had interesting and important topics, especially for the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which are directly related to many of these topics.
“The role of news agencies is irreplaceable, regardless of the huge influence of social platforms on public opinion,” underlined the director of FENA./ /a.i/
