Protests over rising fuel prices continue for second day in Albania

TIRANA, March 10 /ATA/ – A protest, called by activists and civil organizations, continued for a second consecutive day on Thursday as citizens in Tirana and other cities across the country took the streets to protest over the sharply rising oil and gas and consumer goods prices following Russia’s aggression on Ukraine two weeks ago.

Protesters gathered again in front of the Prime Minister’s office in Tirana to protest against rising oil, food and consumer prices.

With banners reading “cut the oil prices,” protesters called on state institutions to act and immediately stop the rise in price of fuel and other consumer goods and stabilize the prices.

Voicing determination to go on with protesting until a solution is found, civil society representatives noted that oil prices slightly dropped at the pumps after yesterday’s protest.

The protest over rising prices expanded to several other cities across the country, with citizens taking to the streets and switching off their cars on streets and roads, totally paralyzing traffic.

A bigger protest, to which citizens from other cities are invited, will take place on Saturday. Meantime protests in the capital will continue every day.

Prime Minister Edi Rama stated in a press conference two days ago that “the oil and fuel prices are directly influenced and determined by the market and not by government decisions.”
