4 suspects arrested over leak of payroll data, Tirana prosecution office: Data downloaded by IT employees

TIRANA Jan 7 /ATA/ – By I.Vata/ The head of the Tirana Prosecutor’s Office, Elisabeta Imeraj, said at a news conference on Friday that personal data on salaries were downloaded by an IT employee who worked at NAIS to send them to another colleague who sold them to private entities.

The Prosecution of Tirana Judicial District, and the Regional Police Directorate of Tirana, at a news conference, clarified that the investigation will continue until the truth about the leak of personal data is fully disclosed.

The Head of the Tirana Prosecutor’s Office, Elisabeta Imeraj, said that the preliminary investigation has uncovered four suspects in the incident of whom 2 are employees in relevant state structures, specifically in the General Directorate of Taxes working as IT employees.

Imeraj threw light on the scheme of the incident adding that the IT specialist in the General Directorate of Taxes, employed in the National Information Service Agency, who had access to personal data consisting of salaries of several months logged on to the system to download the personal data and send them to her colleague who obtained unauthorized data and managed to sell them to private entities.

“So during our investigation we found out that this is not the case of hacking into the institution’s database, it is the case of certain employees abusing their duty through their actions by giving data to be sold to private entities. The prosecution has pressed criminal charges against two other suspects who work in the private sector as these data have been purchased from representatives of state institutions, ” said Imeraj

Imeraj added that the prosecution continues intensive investigations in other leads, after seizing documentation and technical means not only in the General Directorate of Taxes but also in other institutions, such as the Directorate of Road Transport after leakage of data on license plates.
