First cultural heritage site completed, thanks to EU support

TIRANA, December 22 /ATA/ The Catholic community in Rubik will hold a Christmas Mass in the rehabilitated church thanks to the “EU4Culture” program.

This is the 1st cultural heritage site completed, thanks to the EU support.

It was inaugurated last night in the presence of EU Ambassador Luigi Soreca, Minister of Culture Elva Margariti, Dom Gjergj Meta, TeamEurope ambassadors and local authorities, reported today the European Union Delegation in Tirana.

The Church of the Monastery of Rubik, a Franciscan monument, sits on a rocky promontory overlooking the picturesque River Fan. It was originally founded in 1166, as one of the four Benedictine Assemblies in Mirdita region.

The church is especially significant, as its architectural form shows the geo-historical context of Albania, the planimetric form of the church and the arches enclosed in the apse are of the typical Romanesque style, but the style of the mural is clearly Byzantine.

Through the support of the “EU4Culture” program, the important architecture and history of the church and the rare frescoes will encourage national and international tourism to enjoy this cultural monument.

Implemented by UNOPS, EU4Culture aims to rehabilitate and revitalize the Albanian cultural heritage damaged by the November 2019 earthquake.

In parallel, the works have started in 5 other objects: the Mosaic of the National Historical Museum, the Church of Rodon, the Kurçaj Bridge in Kruja, the Venetian Tower and the Hammam in Durrës. /a.a/p.s./
