TIRANA, Dec 11 /ATA/ – The Democratic Party’s National Assembly called by former DP leader and ex-Prime Minister Sali Berisha kicked off at Tirana’s “Air Albania” stadium on Saturday, also coinciding with the 31 anniversary of the party’s foundation.
The party’s Assembly was opened by the Chairman of the DP National Council, Edi Paloka, who said that the current internal crisis that has gripped the main opposition party is a result of the repeated election defeats.
Belind Këlliçi, who was elected at chairman of the Commission of the National Assembly, said that 4934 delegates are attending the today’s event.
According to him, “all the 4200 National Assembly members who signed the form to call the Assembly meeting are attending the gathering and as such the DP Assembly meeting is legal as it forms the required quorum.”
The party’s Chairmanship member Oerd Bylykbashi presented a set of proposals to amend the DP status.
Members are expected to vote on an amendment to party statutes that will require party leaders who lose national elections to immediately resign from the post.
The head of the Commission Belind Këlliçi also read the proposal to discharge the DP leader Lulzim Basha from the post and the proposal will be voted by the party members in a referendum scheduled to be held on December 18.
DP leader Lulzim Basha has called the party’s National Assembly to be held on December 18.
The rift between the two top party officials spiraled down when the United States publicly declared persona non grata and designated former President and Prime Minister Sali Berisha for involvement in “significant corruption” and “misappropriation of public funds”, ensuing with a ban from the parliamentary group decided by Basha.
